I think there's a thread that Dean and I have with songs, and I think we just want to continue that. "Well, I mean, it's going to be Dean and me writing the music, and all of us kind of getting together on the melodies, and Chester writing amazing lyrics and I think it's going to be – dare I say – that DeLeo/STP sound. What can you tell me about it? What does it sound like? We tried producing that, and we tried writing on the last record, and I didn't really care to do that again. "I haven't had his number for a long time, so we weren't writing, no. "So we have new music, you know? I think that's really, in our eyes, what make this valid – is moving forward with new music together." And we've just completed three songs on top of 'Out of Time,' the single, and another song called 'Tomorrow,' which we tracked at the same time that we did 'Out of Time.' So we have a five-song EP that we're getting together right now and in the midst of getting mixed, and hopefully release for October. Like I said, John, things happen for a reason, man, and we've gotten involved with some really amazing people with our management team, and we have people who are really lining up for this to be for the better cause. OK, so now let me ask this: So now Chester's aboard – where are you guys at now? I guess you're rehearsing for the tour already? Or will be soon? And that means being on time, and it means performing from top to bottom the most amazing thing that we can, man." I'm doing it to go out and give people the best rock and roll show that I can give them that we can give them. And that just, you know, man, that's not what I'm in it for, you know what I mean? That's not what I'm doing this for. You know, I think playing live, it turned into a novelty to see what kind of condition Scott was going to be in. And, you know, man, I think it speaks for Dean and Eric and myself - we want to make music, man! We want to make music, and as far as playing, we want to go out and play the best performance that we can do every night and have people hear these songs the way that they were supposed to be performed. "You know, if you look at what we've done over the past 10 years, or even the past 15 years, it hasn't been much, as far as STP is concerned. Just doing that, just moving forward and making Stone Temple Pilots valid on that level. But I think being able to have him in this situation with us, where we're able to move forward, like I said, with creating new music, that's really what me and Dean were interested in. You know, he's got enough going on, and his main concern and priority is Linkin Park, and it always will be. And his main concern was, 'Well, if we're going to do this, then I want to do this in a way that's going to, like I said, honor the past and really make this a valid thing. "Well, I think it's been pretty clear that the three of us had made our decision on terminating Scott, and I think he, Chester, knew he had a place in his life to do this and was interested in doing this. Well, I have to ask this: How did the conversation go? Did you just say, 'Scott's out, we're interested in having you?' Or …" "And I don't know if I believe in 'meant-to-be,' but it definitely was a great opportunity for all of us to continue and honor the past of STP and, more importantly, move forward musically, making music together." "You know, it's funny because it's been told to me and us that he's been a fan of the band for a long time – you know, if you look on his Wikipedia, it actually says that he one day kind of dreamed of being a singer of this band! I mean, it's pretty amazing fortune that after all these years have come around to this happening. "Īnd what was his reaction? I mean, did he expect anything like that to happen? We gave him a call, you know, to see what he was up to. You know, it's a very small world out there in the music world, and there's very few people that would fit the bill of being the person you're looking for, and he was definitely really the only one we were considering to do this, if we were going to continue to do this. We toured together back in 2001 on the Family Values tour back then, and Chester's been over at my house a couple times through the years, and we've known each other. "Um, we've known each other for a long time. OK, let me sort of jump into this: Tell me how you guys ended up connecting with your new singer, Chester Benningfield of Stone Temple Pilots. That's where my Italian relatives went from Italy – they went to Altoona. My and Dean DeLeo's side are all from Altoona, actually. Thanks for taking some time out to talk with me today.
